Suffolk University Law School has appointed a woman recognized for her expertise in race theory and cultural studies as its new dean.

Camille Nelson, currently a professor at Hofstra University School of Law, will be the first woman and the first person of color to hold the position in the Boston school’s 104-year history.

Nelson said in a statement that she is looking forward to joining a community of “engaged scholars, dedicated teachers … and exceptional students.”

She also said, “The institutional commitment to service and to fostering access to the legal profession is inspiring.”

University President David Sargent said Nelson stood out in a nationwide search for a new dean because of her commitment to public service and the pursuit of social justice.

He said he believes Nelson’s background and belief will help continue the school’s mission of providing opportunity to people of all backgrounds and circumstances.

Nelson joins the school as its 12th dean, and she will begin September 1.

Nelson attended the University of Toronto for her undergraduate education and received her law degree from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law.

She then received a Master of Laws from Columbia Law School in New York.

Suffolk Law has about 1,600 students in its day and evening divisions.
